Why do many Indian-American little girls have their hair cut short?

I live in the East Bay, CA and observe Indian-American culture but I want to know some little curiosities. I observe many little Indian girls with their hair chopped short like a (traditional in America) boy's hair. Is there cultural significance to this?

Same as any culture who cut their hair.Easy to care for.HOWEVER not all native americans have their daughter's hair cut short. They usually have longer hair due to a culturally necessary hairstyle.navajo have the hair bun. so do the zuni, hopi and many others. Please think carefully before posting a randumb question as me mum says.

So they don't get it caught in the sink drain when they wash clothes.

It's easy to take care of. Little girls should have hair they can care for themselves. As they get older, they let it grow and can deal with long hair.

Perhaps that style is popular with those particular Indian-Americans? I used to work in Cherokee, NC (on the reservation) and I didn't come across this, I came across kids with various hair lengths.
